Back From My Mini-Adventure ((Just in Time for my Birthday))
July 24, 2011 in My Updates by brok1881
So Jason and I left on a 3-day adventure to go look at a Ford Expedition that was 4 hours away in Indiana. It was the scariest ride in my car ever!! Keep in mind, my car had 204,000 miles, a cracked windshield, no windshield wipers, shitty headlights, and no insurance. And I took it on this long of a trip. No I’m not stupid, it’s more or less that I’m just plain crazy.
So we got lost on the way to Bloomington Indiana, where the SUV was. We decided to just find the nearest hotel, and stay for the night. We ended up finding a Hampton Inn, went to check in, and they wanted damn-near $100 a night. SCREW THAT!! I would sleep in my car for that price, lol. So we found a Motel 6, that was only about $40/night. This was our first bad decision. It was so disgusting!! SO GROSS!! The first thing I did, was check the damn bed for bed-bugs. That’s that last thing I need. I made the mistake of taking my shoes off and walking around on the linoleum in my socks. After about 5 minutes, the bottom of my socks were BLACK! The towels all had, what looked like, semen stains on them. Not really what I want to dry my face off with. I was so excited to take a shower. Mostly because since we have been staying at Jason’s parents house, they only have a bath, no shower. But this hotel was so disgusting, that I couldn’t use the shower. Especially considering that I didn’t bring my flip-flops to wear in the shower. We checked in to this room at 2am, and they still told us we had to check out by 11am. I thought that was kind of shitty. I ended up getting about 5 hours of sleep. The next morning, we ate at Denny’s, and drove to the SUV that we went up there for. It looked good on the outside, it had leather seats, and ice-cold A/C ((that’s what else I’ve never had in a vehicle, air conditioning)). Right off the bat, me and Jason saw that it was leaking oil from more than one spot underneath. So we decided to move along, and not get that one. The whole reason we drove all of this way. It was ok though, because there was like 7 car dealerships within a mile from there, so we checked them ALL out. No luck. They all had some kind of problem. Leaked oil, had been in an accident, had a knocking in the motor, etc. I didn’t drive all that way to look for junk. So we looked at vehicles from about 10am to 5pm. We drove all over the middle of Indiana, stopping at any place that sold cars.
The sun was starting to go down, and all the dealerships were starting to close. We had to find another hotel. I was starting to get really disappointed. I thought for sure we would have something by now, and we wouldn’t have to stay another night in a hotel. This was not the case. We ended up in Martinsville, Indiana. It seemed like a nice little town. We found a Super 8 motel, and on the same road as it, we saw at least 3 HUGE car dealerships. This was a good sign. With so many full-size dealerships, there HAD to be big competition. We could see them all from our motel window.
Ok, I’m jumping the hotel experience. So I go into the Super 8 to check in. It was about $60 for the night. I asked for a smoking room with 1 bed (it’s cheaper that way). He said that he would have to give us a 2 single bed room, because that’s all they had available. The guy at the counter asked me to follow him to the room to make sure everything worked. I thought he was going to kill me or something, lol. So we get to the room, and sure enough, the A/C doesn’t work. So we go back down to the desk, and he says, ok I will give you a king-size bed room, with the couch and all this extra crap. That one had a bad fridge in it. So when it was all said and done, I paid the same price, but got a quadruple-upgrade. We ended up in a HUGE room with two queen beds, a microwave, and a fridge. It was rated at $150 a night. This was WAAAAAAY better than the disgusting Motel 6. I could finally take a shower.
So Jason and I decided to not wait until the morning to see what these car lots had, so we checked out their websites. I got through the first two dealerships, with no luck. I was browsing through the last one, and I found this Jeep. It was perfect!! It was fully loaded, leather seats, sunroof, all kinds of crazy stuff I’ve never had, lol. WORKING WINDSHIELD WIPERS!! 4 wheel drive, and a towing package. I read on this website, that when pulling a travel trailer, you want to use 80% of your towing vehicles towing capacity. I did the math for the travel trailer we are looking at, and believe it or not, 80% of this Jeep’s towing capacity was EXACTLY…..yes EXACTLY the loaded down weight of the travel trailer. Was this all coincidence? I knew something about this town we were in felt so right. So we got up early the next morning, and raced over to check out this Jeep before even eating breakfast. Did I mention they were asking less than what we were budgeted for?! Long story short, we ended up getting this one. We talked them down about $3500 the asking price. On top of that, we made sure to get a 12 month/12,000 mile warranty. I wasnt going to get a vehicle without a warranty. So I need to get a travel trailer QUICK while I still got the warranty, lol.
I’ve decided that I’m going to find a Jeep dealership to take it to Monday. I want to have them look it over for me, check the brakes, check any recalls, make sure the towing package is all set up right, and safe. See if it needs anything more or less to do some towing.
The trip back was amazing!! Comfortable seats, air conditioning, a reliable vehicle. It was such a load off. I’m so close to reaching my dreams, and I have my followers, fans, and friends to help. I can’t wait to start exploring the country!! We are closer than ever now!! Just in time for my birthday (on the 28th).

I always liked Jeep products, hope you got a gem Mike, sometimes your hard work and due dillagance pays off
I think I really did get a gem with this one, I’m really excited.
So in the end the journey came down to the last place for what you needed? So what happened to your car? Then of course there is the insurance issue to take care of…For this major investment, don’t you think you ought to cover yourself? Not just the vehicle and trailer but also PIP, (personal injury protection.) Especially since you plan to travel miles away from anyone you know.
Then also how are you getting this vehicle registered with plates and title? This usually takes like at least 30 days.
Now is this model a 4 wheel drive version or not? Just thinking about those snowy and icy roads in the Winter months, wherever you may be.
It is 4 wheel drive, and it’s a V-8 as well. I’m calling around tomorrow for insurance prices, just not really sure what kind to get. I always got PLPD because I always drove crappy cars.
WOW, sounds like you found a great deal! I very excited for you Mike. Check with Progressive on the ins. they were less expensive for my 08 car and i have the PIP. You’re that much closer to being on the road….SAFELY!
Now you can drive up to Boston!
What kind of insurance to get? a 100/250/50 Liability would be the minimum I would get. Comprehensive depends how much loss you can afford plus the Deductible. Medical and PIP at least $50K. Roadside Assistance, towing, a new battery, gas etc.
An equal concern is that you learn how do drive a SUV because they are top heavy and the center of gravity is higher. That means they are more prone to tumble and roll. They also tend to skid and roll from side to side more so than a car, especially when towing a trailer.
You might try Amiga, Progressive and GEICO Insurance COs. It’s the service after the wreck that is the most important set of issues you have to deal with, not the upfront costs of getting insured.
Insurance Co make it a policy to pay the least possible and save money for profits, rather than take care of their customers. Some are better at it than others when it comes to customer services.
What the large print gives you, the small print takes away in any insurance contract.
So what happened to your car?
After I talked the salesman down as far as he would go, I threw it in as a trade. I actually got $500 for it. Which is good considering how bad of shape it was in. I think i’m between Geico and Progressive.
