Some type of garment has been used by Humans to cover their genitals for centuries. They may have been for protection from the natural elements, such as wind, sand storms, rain, snow etc. or as a form of modesty. As well underwear in some form or another acts as a barrier for the body fluids that get discharged and stain any other garments worn over the underwear. In other occasions of time, the garments were highly ornamental, colored and decorated. The Cod Piece comes to mind as a genital covering used during the Middle Ages. Some styles of underwear are still available today that use this concept. The Loin Cloth is another form of underwear, which is simply a rectangular piece of cloth or animal hide that is put between the legs and then fastened in place with a string of some kind at the waist. This type of underwear is still in use today by tribal groups in indigenous areas of the world and was also used by many Native Tribes in North and South America. The Fundoshi is a wrapped piece of cloth, rectangular in length that is used in Asia as a masculine genital covering. This single piece of cloth is wrapped between the legs and then around the waist. The ends are then folded into the waist line. It is still worn today by wrestlers. The G String or Posing strap is a triangular piece of cloth attached to a thin string material, that covers the genital area, for the most minimal look in underwear.
